Matt 6:24
"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
In this simple statement it is easy to see Jesus is talking about serving him and the devil. He is explaining to us we cannot serve him and the devil at the same time. Unfortunately since we are flesh, if we try to "play the field" with Jesus and Satan we will end up bending to the will of the devil.
There is another dimensional depth to this simple statement. We must have a master. Gnostics, Agnostics and the like believe we can be our own "gods". They believe we can control our own destiny. The fact is, since Jesus is saying we cannot have 2 masters, he is also stating that we cannot have no masters.
Mammon is greed or wealth. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and who is the architect of evil? Satan himself. Even if one thinks they just love money and spend their whole lives making it, they are only serving the devil. To Satan being worshiped by proxy is better than not being worshiped at all, therefore he will readily accept us dedicating our lives to anything ungodly.
